How to Measure Patio Furniture for a Cover

The Right Cover Starts With the Right Fit. Take your item's actual measurements first, then compare them with the size and fitting instructions for the specific cover.

Set up the item as it will be covered.

Put any cushions that will remain under the cover in place. For a dining set, position the chairs as you intend to store them, then measure the whole arrangement. Use one unit throughout: inches or centimeters.

Record actual dimensions without adding a general allowance. The right allowance depends on the particular cover, its shape, and its fitting instructions.

Width: side to side.

Facing the front of the item, measure in a straight line between its widest outer points. Include arms or a back that extends beyond the seat. For a dining arrangement, include the furthest chair edges.

Record this number as width, or W. Do not use the seat width when the outside of the furniture is wider.

Depth: front to back.

Measure the full straight-line distance from the furthest front point to the furthest back point. Include a sloping back, projecting legs, or other parts that will sit inside the cover's footprint.

Record this number as depth, or D. Measure the overall footprint rather than following the curve of the fabric or cushions.

Height: ground to the highest point.

Measure vertically from the ground to the tallest part of the item as arranged for covering. A high back or a cushion may be the highest point. Record this number as height, or H.

When comparing with a cover, check where its bottom edge is intended to sit. Do not assume the cover must touch the ground or that a taller size will fit better.

Check what three numbers cannot show.

Look for curved backs, high arms, round or oval tops, projecting corners, and L-shaped arrangements. Three overall dimensions may not describe these shapes well enough to choose a cover.

For a round or oval item, record both directions across the widest points and identify the shape. For an unusual arrangement, prepare a description and clear photos from the front, side, and above before asking for fit advice.

Compare, then recheck.

Match your W, D, and H to the labels on the specific size guide; some guides use length, or L, instead of depth. Read whether the stated numbers describe the cover or the item it fits. Check the fitting allowance, fastening positions, and use limitations before ordering.

For an AC unit, use the equipment manufacturer's instructions and exact model details as well as measurements. Cover only while off and when permitted, then remove the cover before operation.
